Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services on ACT Teams

This course is designed on the premise that “Recovery is Possible” and working ‘As If’ people can succeed in independent housing with supportive and treatment services based on the principles of consumer choice. Psychiatric rehabilitative services are client-centered, strength-based services designed to promote self-determination, skill development, and connection to resources that assist in the success of living independently. In this training, participants will discover the importance of identifying an individual’s learning style and how different learning styles translate to teaching psychiatric rehabilitative skills. They will also learn the step-by-step processes of assessing both housing and psychiatric rehabilitation skill building needs and developing an individualized plan to support clients’ success in the community. The course will conclude with opportunities to practice appropriate documentation in order to ensure that the treatment plan accurately reflects the systematic approach to providing psychiatric rehabilitative services on an ACT team.

Supervisory Motivational Interviewing

This training is offered to Clinical Supervisors and Managers as well as Clinicians seeking to advance in their agency. Participants will learn specific approaches that focuses on a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication. In addition, participants will learn effective techniques in order to engage employees in the process of making positive change that lead to individual, group, department, and/or organizational success. At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to: Learn, practice, and feel the ‘spirit’ of motivational interviewing in supervision, learn and practice the core motivational interviewing skills in supervision, and identify opportunities to incorporate good MI-Adherent supervision in order to engage employees in the process of making positive change.

Participants will have the opportunity to work in groups and use role play to enhance skills critical to engaging consumers in the idea of work through the final stage of developing a follow-along plan. Finally, participants will develop person centered goals, objectives, and interventions specific to employment.

This training will focus on the key elements of effective Job Development. To engage in effective Job Development, employment specialists must use the entire ACT team to ensure a good job match. First, using the Career profile, specialists will learn to engage the ITT to identify individual strengths and barriers to employment. Specialists will then learn how to use the entire team to identify a stream of potential employers that match the consumer's preferences. Through role play, participants will practice engaging and developing relationships with employers through planned, in-person contacts that lead to competitive employment. Additionally, specialists will strategize ways to address workplace adjustments for individual consumers.

*Required for ACT Employment Specialists, Team Leaders, and Clinical Leaders

It is important for individuals to know how their jobs (earned income) might impact benefits such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and other subsidies. In order to help people make informed choices about their financial futures, employment specialists and other staff members learn the basics of benefits information. They also will help individuals understand benefits requirements (rules) and other regulations related to benefits & employment, as well as, assist in connecting them to benefits counselors, who calculate the impact that income from employment will have upon various benefits. Staff may also assist with reporting of income to Social Security Administration.

Motivational Interviewing (2-Day Workshop)

This 2-day course includes Introductory and Advanced Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered communication approach, which enhances intrinsic motivation for making behavior changes by exploring and resolving ambivalence. At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to: understand and feel the ‘Spirit’ of MI, understand the four processes of how an MI conversation unfolds over time, learn and practice the person-centered foundational skills of MI using open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing skills (OARS), all within the context of clinician acceptance, compassion, and empathy. Participants will also learn how to recognize, respond to, and strengthen ‘Change Talk’ which can then lead to the clients’ commitment and development of a change plan.

This two-day workshop will help participants learn and understand MI philosophy, principles and skills. Participants will learn to apply MI in an interactive learning environment while discovering new perspectives on ways to interact with clients to enhance their confidence, motivation and commitment to change.
