It is important for individuals to know how their jobs (earned income) might impact benefits such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and other subsidies. In order to help people make informed choices about their financial futures, employment specialists and other staff members learn the basics of benefits information. They also will help individuals understand benefits requirements (rules) and other regulations related to benefits & employment, as well as, assist in connecting them to benefits counselors, who calculate the impact that income from employment will have upon various benefits. Staff may also assist with reporting of income to Social Security Administration.

This 2-day course includes Introductory and Advanced Motivational Interviewing. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered communication approach, which enhances intrinsic motivation for making behavior changes by exploring and resolving ambivalence. At the conclusion of this training, participants will be able to: understand and feel the ‘Spirit’ of MI, understand the four processes of how an MI conversation unfolds over time, learn and practice the person-centered foundational skills of MI using open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summarizing skills (OARS), all within the context of clinician acceptance, compassion, and empathy. Participants will also learn how to recognize, respond to, and strengthen ‘Change Talk’ which can then lead to the clients’ commitment and development of a change plan.

This two day workshop will help participants learn and understand MI philosophy, principles and skills. Participants will learn to apply MI in an interactive learning environment while discovering new perspectives on ways to interact with clients to enhance their confidence, motivation and commitment to change.
